6 Nassau The city of Nassau on the island of New Providence is the capital of the Bahamas. Nicknamed the 'Atlantic City of the Tropics', this bustling port offers plenty of Caribbean charm: sandy beaches, year-round sunshine, glitzy casinos and duty-free shopping. The British began settling in the Bahamas in 1647, and made it an official colony about 130 years later. In the 18th century it was a rendezvous for pirates, including the infamous Blackbeard, and when Captain Rogers was appointed Governor in 1718 he found the town so squalid that he preferred to live on board his ship! Conditions improved greatly over the coming decades, and many loyalists settled in Nassau after the American Revolutionary War broke out in 1776. Since attaining independence from the UK in 1973, the islands have prospered through tourism and the financial services industry. Many reminders of the colonial era survive in Nassau, where you can find a statue of Queen Victoria and the Queen's Staircase - a flight of 66 stone steps. Please note that Nassau is an extremely busy cruise port, and, depending on the berth, the distance from your ship to Bay Street may be as much as 750 yards. 08:00 18:00
